Highlights of the North Wales Coast

The North Wales Coastline has plenty of stunning beaches and historical sites to explore during a stay at Garreg Goch holiday park. From Norman castles to Copper Mines, you’ll find wonderful viewpoints around every corner when travelling through this wonderful part of Wales.

To help you compile a holiday hitlist, we’ve listed just some of the highlights you can find along the North Wales Coast below. All are within easy reach of our luxury self-catering accommodation and touring and camping pitches.

Porth Wen

Porth Wen Beach is a picturesque natural harbour surrounded by large rock formations and the ruins of Porth Wen Brickworks. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a day of kayaking or open-water swimming in the calm waters of this sheltered bay. The waters are full of wildlife, such as wrasse, dogfish, eels, crabs, shrimps and more. Many of these sea creatures can be found along the beach if you fancy a spot of rockpooling. Similarly, Porth Wen is an excellent location for fishing! For the best catch, we suggest positioning yourself on rocks on the far side of the bay.

If you don’t fancy going in the water, then we highly recommend exploring the incredible Porth Wen Brickworks. The walk around these Victorian quartz quarries are both eerie and beautiful, making them a must-see when visiting Porth Wen.

Please bear in mind that dogs must be kept on leads and children must be closely supervised at all times at Porth Wen Brickworks. There are many sharp drops along the path.

Black Rock Sands

With picturesque sands and wide-open spaces, Black Rock Sands is most definitely a highlight of the North Wales coastline. This beach is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, picnics, and watersports, as well as being a great beach for children to run freely around.

What’s more, Black Rock Sands is just a short walk (around 20 minutes) from our coastal holiday park, making it the perfect day out when staying at Garreg Goch.

Penrhyn Castle

Penrhyn Castle is a Norman castle with fantastic views over iconic landmarks such as The Great Orme, Snowdonia and Puffin Island. There’s plenty to keep the family entertained at this incredible historic site. Spend your morning roaming the immaculate gardens or exploring the Victorian kitchens.

There’s a children’s play area onsite as well as two brilliant cafes where you can enjoy a full meal or light bite to refuel for the rest of the day. Penrhyn Castle is an absolute highlight of the North Wales Coast for the whole family to enjoy.

Anglesey

Anglesey is a small island just off the mainland and is a must-see for anyone visiting the North Wales Coast. The isle is full of exciting and unique experiences to discover, including incredible beaches, food festivals, music events, markets and more. Although Anglesey has plenty going on, the island itself is not to be overlooked.

We recommend visiting The Copper Kingdom which is enveloped by the multicoloured rocks which made it famous. During the 18th-century ‘Welsh copper rush’, The Copper Kingdom was once the biggest and busiest copper mine in the world. Nowadays, the copper mine is a base for a booming boat-building industry. The remarkable scenery is also used as a backdrop for many science-fiction films.

You should also take the time to visit the South Stack Lighthouse. To reach the South Stack, you must follow a delightful coastal path through the protected heathland. Keep an eye out for the incredible wildlife that lives there as you walk. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of rare silver-studded blue butterflies and reptiles such as common lizards and adders.

To reach the lighthouse itself you must climb the summit of four-hundred steps – but don’t worry, the climb is worth it!  From the highest point on this island, you can take in the beautiful sights of the sea below - and perhaps spot a puffin or two.

The Great Orme Tramway

If you’re looking for a unique way to experience the North Wales Coastline, then a ride on The Great Orme Tramway is a fantastic option. The Great Orme Tramway has been going since 1902 and as a nod to its heritage, the trams have been repainted to look like the original Victorian tram carts.

Climb aboard and let the tram whisk you away to see stunning views over the North Wales coast. Along the way you may spot some of the local wildlife on the cliffs, such as puffins and mountain goats.  The tram gently makes its way through the Great Orme Country Park and Nature Reserve across to the Great Orme’s summit, where you can disembark and soak up the incredible view.
