Caernarfon

Caernarfon Castle has deservedly earned the status of a UNESCO Heritage site because of its’ thirteenth century castle, town walls and original harbour. It is just a thirty minute drive from Garreg Goch Holiday Park or a leisurely but breathtakingly beautiful journey can be made on the Welsh Highland Railway from Porthmadog to a station built directly below the castle walls.

Caernarfon Castle was designed by a Medieval architect and built to state of the art standards on the Banks of the River Seiont. The fortress, is one of the largest and best preserved of its’ kind in the World. Edward 1 commissioned this huge castle to be built as a palace and military fortress in bands of different coloured limestone with modern bathrooms, toilets and running water. It had a drawbridge and a row of six portcullis’s and much of the original building is still intact, making it a fantastic place to visit and explore.

The town itself is full of narrow, winding streets, independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. On a hilltop East of the town, the Roman Fort Segontium lays its’ treasures bare so that more history can be discovered at these remains dating back to 77AD.

But the town has far more to offer than just History. The old slate Quarry and derelict buildings near the Harbour have been renovated to house Cei Llechi, an artisan’s Hub for craftspeople, with an art gallery, a photo studio, a café and a restaurant. Nearby, the attractions are as varied as they are exciting with places such as Caernarfon Golf Club, the Inigo Slate Woks, Gypsy Wood Park outdoor play park, Paintball Wales and the Pant Du Vineyard.

There are also wonderful opportunities for outdoor pursuits in this area at venues such as Plas Menai Watersports, where visitors can try out Sailing, Catamarans, Windsurfing, Canoeing, Kayaking and Rock Climbing. Or for an exciting day you’ll never forget take a pleasure Flight from Caernarfon Airport, where you’ll get the chance to view the beauty of Snowdonia and the stunning Llyn Peninsula from the air.

All of this amazing History, these beautiful sights and the opportunities to try fantastic activities can be accessed easily from your holiday home year-round at Garreg Goch Holiday Park making it a great base for your holiday at any time of the year.
