Just a short scenic drive from Garreg Goch Holiday Park lies the coastal town of Harlech. Harlech is situated within the bounds of Snowdonia National Park and is popular with visitors to the region. The area is steeped in history and has plenty to discover during a visit. Spend your day exploring the castle, before perusing the local shops and eateries.

Walk around Harlech Castle

Within the town you’ll find the perfectly preserved Harlech Castle, in its’ spectacular setting, high on a rocky outcrop overlooking the coast. The castle boasts breathtaking views of Cardigan Bay, with the mountains of Snowdonia across the sea as a backdrop to this dramatic panorama. Harlech Castle itself is majestic and one of the best-preserved fortresses of its kind.

Harlech Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where King Edward had his stronghold. It now has a café and a fantastic visitor centre. With its spiral staircases and towers still intact, visitors can walk the circuit of the battlements outside, and imagine the bitter struggles which ensued below.

Explore Harlech Beach

Below the castle, you’ll find a spectacular beach with miles of stunning golden sands, backed by sand dunes. The Zig Zag beach path is a favourite stroll which runs between Harlech and Llandanwy beaches. This is well worth a try on a day trip from Garreg Goch to Harlech.

If you’re feeling adventurous you could give surfing a go. Or, you could enjoy a picnic as the kids play in the shallows. Harlech is known for it’s fantastic sunsets. Take pretty pictures as the sun dips below the horizon.

Climb the Steepest Street in the Northern Hemisphere

Harlech has a unique claim to fame – it is home to the steepest street in the Northern Hemisphere. Fford Pen Lech is located on the Wales Coast Path and has a gradient of 1:2.67! Test your fitness and hike the path, or you can drive if you’d prefer!

There are several unique independent shops to peruse, if you plan on indulging in a spot of retail therapy during your visit to Harlech. Some of our favourites include a pottery studio, delicatessen, an interiors shop, a chocolatier and several artisan gift shops.

There are also many cafes and eating places to choose from, which gives the town an exclusive and distinctive feel.

Getting to Harlech  

It takes approximately 25 minutes to drive from Garreg Goch to Harlech, depending on traffic. On the drive to this beautiful town, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the coastline, mountains, and places of historic interest.
